Sepsis is a generalized infection, that is, a set of serious infections throughout the body, and which can lead to multiple organ failure.

According to information from the Latin American Institute of Sepsis, mortality in ICUs due to sepsis in Brazil is higher than in countries such as India and Argentina. Sepsis accounts for about 25% of icu bed occupations in the country, and approximately 55% of these patients die.
The number of deaths from sepsis per year in Brazil can reach more than 230,000, surpassing myocardial infarction and cancer. In comparison, the world average mortality from sepsis is around 30 to 40%, which evidences the severe situation of the disease in Brazil.
Sepsis occurs more frequently in hospitals, in patients undergoing treatment with antibiotics or catheters and probes.
