On March 31, health and nutrition day was celebrated in Brazil. The date is part of the calendar of the Brazilian Ministry of Health, and aims to stimulate the reflection of the importance of our choices in relation to food.

Currently, a large portion of the world’s population is overweight, and regularly consumes industrialized, processed and ultra-processed foods, high in sodium, fats, sugars and poor calories. In addition, the number of fast-food chains, food-trucks and burgershops around the world has been increasing exponentially, as an outlet adopted by small business owners for times of economic crisis.

This has contributed to a drop in people’s immunity, and to the development of diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer. The low in immunity leave the body extremely vulnerable to contagion with various diseases, such as the New Coronavirus (COVID-19), which mainly affects the elderly, people with chronic respiratory problems or other pre-existing diseases, and people with immunity problems.

Another aggravating factor in the current world scenario is the impossibility of performing physical activities for many people, because of the social isolation necessary to slow the spread of COVID-19. Academies and other physical activity-focused establishments had to close their doors during the period stipulated by governments for quarantine, and even outdoor activities were temporarily suspended in many cities around the world until the virus is controlled.

All these factors contribute to our body being at risk, which makes this date even more important.
