Today, October 18, the Doctor’s Day is celebrated, a date chosen in honor of the birth of the patron saint of the profession and protector of doctors, St. Luke. The date is also celebrated in countries such as England, Portugal, Italy and Spain.

The doctor is one of the most important professionals for modern society, and is responsible for caring for and promoting the health of the entire population. Among its attributions is the diagnosis of diseases, adequate support and indications for the cure of diseases, and indications of preventive methods and to obtain a healthier life. In addition, medical research is extremely important to ensure public health and prevent the spread of disease-causing microorganisms.

Recently, a study conducted by the Hospital das Clínicas of the Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine, a unit of USP, mapped microorganism communities in the institution’s ICU. The researchers found that many disease-causing bacteria in the ICU’s are resistant to some level to the cleaning products used to reduce the risk of hospital infections.

Despite strict cleaning protocols in neonatal ICUs and ICU’s, thousands of deaths are recorded annually in Brazil, caused by hospital infections. The situation is further aggravated by the fact that patients in these sectors are more vulnerable than in other areas of hospitals, because of their medical conditions.

The study was published in August 2019 by the swiss specialist medical journal Frontiers in Public Health. The research reinforces the need for physicians, nurses, cleaning professionals, and even visitors and family members to maintain high rigor by complying with hygiene, cleaning, sterilization and use of protective equipment, such as procedure gloves and masks.

Do not neglect your health and your patient's health. Always make the correct use of procedure gloves, and choose certified and approved materials.

Happy Doctor’s Day.
